Chicken Shashlik

Shashlik is a great sizzling starter.

Scrumptious shashlik starter surely turns the heads around you when your order comes to the table! Marinated chicken (or lamb) chunks are skewered to wooden or metal skewers to grill or cook in a tandoor. Served in a bed of roasted vegetables, typically bell peppers, onions and tomatoes.

The spices used to marinate the chicken or lamb pieces are somewhat different from tikka or tandoori spices. Resulting in a flavour of its own.

Shashlik is another favourite starter that is typically served on a wooden board with a hint of salad and a sauce.

Chicken or lamb pieces are marinated in curry spices, yogurt and then grilled in a tandoor for the authentic taste. It is also common to add vegetable pieces like mushrooms, bell peppers, tomatoes and onions in between the meat cubes.

Shashlik should not be confused with seekh kebab, another popular starter also served in curry houses. Meat cubes are skewered in shashlik whereas mince meat is used in seekh kebabs.

No, there is a vegetarian version of shashlik starter. You may ask for paneer shashlik, which uses chunks of paneer (cottage cheese) instead of meat cubes. Served with roasted bell peppers, onions and tomatoes.

A chicken shashlik could be as hot as a chicken tikka starter. But, shashlik is more sizzling and bursts with spices and juices of cooked vegetables served along with the grilled skewered meat or paneer pieces.
